New Year's Resolutions for Better Health

January 13, 2023

We’ve gathered these tips to help you stay committed and on track for becoming a healthier, happier you in 2023:

  1. Create a reasonable workout routine.

The secret to creating a lasting habit is sticking with it until it’s part of your routine.

Choose a form of exercise that you enjoy, make sure it fits into your schedule, and set an attainable goal — the more realistic it is, the more likely you are to stay with it. Even simply walking, biking, or dancing a few days a week are great ways to get started if you're new to working out.

Exercise is a stress-relieving activity that can positively impact both physique and mood. Losing excess body weight can also help lower your risk of chronic health conditions.

      2. Eat healthy meals.

The two critical things to consider for a well-balanced diet are what you eat and how often you eat.

Whole grains, vegetables, and fresh fruit are particularly nutrient-rich and good for your body. Make sure to choose unprocessed food that's low in calories, high in fiber, and rich in vitamins and minerals more often than not.

Eating healthy food and maintaining optimal meal times can help you manage your body weight, control your blood sugar, and reduce your blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

3. Commit to a healthier sleep routine.

Getting the right amount of quality sleep is essential. A good night's sleep can help restore your health, recharge your brain, and refresh your mood.

Prioritize having proper sleep hygiene and good sleep habits, such as:

  • Going to sleep and waking up at the same time every day
  • Sleeping in a dark, cool, quiet, and comfortable environment
  • Setting time aside to wind down and unplug at the end of the day
  • Limiting screen time with devices that can delay sleep

4. Manage your stress.

Chronic stress can take a toll on your body and mind, leading to anxiety, depression, and even health complications.

Find healthy ways to deal with stress that are effective for you – developing a personalized approach to managing and coping with it. Here are a few ways to start:

  • Identify which situations make you feel physically and mentally anxious. Avoid them where reasonable, and prepare tools to help you handle them when you can’t.
  • Develop time management skills. Make the most out of your days by organizing your schedule so you don't feel overwhelmed with workload or deadlines.
  • Practice relaxation techniques to calm yourself, such as deep breathing, guided meditation, and progressive muscle relaxation. Taking breaks to check in with yourself whenever you need to can let you “restart” your day at any time.

5. Get good health coverage.

Regular check-ups and preventive health care can help you stay well. Screenings are particularly helpful in catching problematic conditions before they become more serious or unmanageable. Early detection makes treatment much more effective.
