How to Stay Healthy During Winter

February 08, 2022

It’s that time of year again – everyone seems to be suffering from a scratchy throat, nasty cough, or runny nose. Cold and flu season is upon us, and the best way to try and keep you and your loved ones healthy is to follow these simple recommendations.

Take Precautions

If you haven’t already, consider getting your flu and Covid vaccines. For Coronavirus, this also includes your booster shot which can help protect you from new variants of the virus. Call your local pharmacy to set up an appointment or make one online at your pharmacy’s website.

Wash your hands frequently with warm water and soap. Using hand sanitizer is a helpful alternative. Keep a small container in your car to use after pumping gas or grocery shopping. Also try to avoid touching your eyes and mouth, particularly if you’re out in public spaces.

Lastly, continue wearing a mask in high traffic areas, especially if you or someone you’ve been in contact with is experiencing symptoms.

Stay Hydrated

When it’s scorching hot and the sun is beating down on a summer’s day, you probably find yourself drinking water naturally. While it may be harder to remember in winter, staying hydrated is still just as important.

Hydration helps energize you, protects your skin, lowers blood pressure, and provides a host of other health benefits. Eight glasses of water per day are recommended. If that seems like a lot, try sprucing up your water by adding fruit or lemon, or infusing it with tea. You’ll still be hydrating while giving your taste buds a little more variety.

Get a Sufficient Amount of Vitamin D

During the winter months, Vitamin D is especially important. It strengthens our immune systems and helps our bodies fight off sickness, thus helping reduce the risk of infection and flu. Our bodies make this Vitamin through sun exposure, but if you live in Michigan during the winter, you will not get a sufficient amount of Vitamin D from the sun.

To help ensure you’re getting enough, try incorporating more of the following foods into your diet: yogurt, cheese, fish or eggs. You can also talk to your doctor about adding a Vitamin D supplement.

Dress for the Weather

Whether you’re heading out for a walk or driving into work, make sure you’re dressing appropriately for the cold winter weather. Layers, a coat, a hat, a scarf, and gloves are your wardrobe must-haves this time of year. Even if you don’t find yourself spending much time outdoors, you’ll want to have these items in the car with you at all times in case you were to get stuck or into an accident or needed to perform or wait for roadside assistance.

Proper footwear is also a necessity. Choose footwear that will keep your feet warm and also give good traction to help you avoid slipping on ice or snow.
