Empowering Michigan Women for International Women's Day

March 09, 2021

How can we bring the message of International Women's Day into our hearts and our daily lives?

March 8th is celebrated around the world as a day to recognize the achievements of women, raise awareness against gender bias and take action for equality.

We all know strong, amazing women in our communities who are respected business owners, hardworking employees and cherished family members -- not to mention creative artists, brilliant thinkers and talented athletes.

Supporting women’s ability to thrive and self-actualize in the world requires that we examine our own minds for gender-based assumptions, work toward fairness in our systems and laws, allocate resources for women’s health issues and awareness, and promote opportunities for women.

Concrete ideas for bringing these goals into reality include:

  • Research and donate to charities that support women, from recovery shelters to STEM education for girls.
  • Have family conversations about gender equality and dissect bias and stereotypes you see in cultural messaging.
  • Educate yourself about the women, either from the past or currently in the making, who have pushed the envelope with their achievements, making new frontiers possible for those that follow in their footsteps.
  • Make sure the women you know (and you, yourself, if applicable) are enabled to get preventative medical care and regular checkups.

So today, make International Women's Day your day and do what you can to truly make a positive difference for women.

What will you do to honor the women in your community?
